At the library's front line stands the Circulation Department, where customers register for library cards, check out material, and settle any outstanding balances on their accounts. Most materials may be borrowed from and returned to Circulation, including videos and compact discs.
Library Card Policy:
A library card is free to anyone who lives, works, owns property, attends school, or is retired from employment in Nashua. Spouses and children of Nashua employees (or retired employees) and property-owners are also eligible for free cards.
Residents of Nashua must present one of the following:
Employees in Nashua must present a photo ID (or two alternate forms of ID) along with business cards, pay-check stubs, or letters from the employer which show their name and workplace. (Those retired from employment must bring in a letter from the past employer.)
Property owners in Nashua must present a photo ID (or two alternate forms of ID) and tax-bills showing their name and property address.
Students (adult) enrolled in Nashua must present either a school photo ID, or a non-school photo ID plus a tuition bill or letter from the teacher/headmaster/administration.
Spouses/children of Nashua employees (or retired employees) and property-owners must be present with the taxpayer to whom they are related (and spouses must present ID).
Those who do not qualify for any of the above may purchase non-resident library cards for an annual fee of $60. They must present a photo ID (or two alternative forms of ID) showing their name and address.
Those who reside in shelters or temporary housing in Nashua may obtain cards. They must present something in writing which indicates they reside at the temporary housing.
Children (ages 5-11) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to obtain a card. The parent/legal guardian must sign for the child and assume financial responsibility for materials borrowed on the card. The parents/guardians must present ID (as above).
Young Adults (ages 12-17) assume financial responsibility for materials borrowed on their cards. They must present either a photo ID, class schedule, paystub/bill/mail, or student ID form filled out by the school.
Those who do not qualify for free library cards and wish to have computer access without borrowing material need not purchase a non-resident card. They may obtain a special computer card. Proof of residency is not required, but a photo ID (or two alternate pieces of ID) is required of adults. See above (teens) for ID required of young adults.
A computer card may be upgraded to a regular borrower card when the customer meets the requirements and proper ID (per above) is presented.There is a $3.00 replacement fee for lost or damaged library cards.
Cardholders must use their own library card to borrow material and are responsible for all material borrowed on their cards. The only exception is customers under the age of 12, for whom a parent or legal guardian is responsible. All fines for late material as well as replacement fees for lost or damaged material must be paid for by the cardholder or parent/legal guardian.
Books, periodicals, audiobooks (limit 5), and compact discs (limit 10) circulate for a three week period. Hot copies of popular fiction (limit 1) and hot audiobooks (limit 1) circulate for a one week period and may not be renewed. Videotapes (limit 10) and DVDs (limit 10) circulate for a one week period. Hot DVDs (limit 2) circulate for a two day period and may not be renewed. Playstation and Nintendo Wii videogames (limit 2) circulate for a one-week period and may not be renewed. Art prints (limit 2) circulate for a one month period.
Overdue fines for most items are .20 per day/per title, for a maximum of $5.00/item.
Overdue fines on DVDs, videogames, and "Hot Copies" are .60 per day/per title, for a maximum of $10.00/item.
Museum passes and audio-visual equipment have steeper fines (call for details). To minimize the probability of paying overdue fines, sign up for a Library Elf account, which will send you an email or text message before your library material becomes due.
Renewals may be done by telephone or online. Requested (reserved) or overdue material cannot be renewed. Hot copies of popular fiction, hot audiobooks, and hot DVD titles may not be renewed. Playstation and Wii videogames may not be renewed.
Materials may be requested (reserved) either online or through a librarian. You are allowed up to 40 outstanding requests at any given time. A librarian will contact you (by phone or email) when your request is ready to be picked up. Requested material is generally held for three days until it is reshelved or given to the next waiting customer.
Two bookdrops and one media-drop are available for returning materials when the library is closed. The bookdrops are on Court Street and in the parking lot. The media drop is at the front door. All videotapes, DVDs, CDs, audiotapes, and Playstation and Wii games should be returned to the media drop when the library is closed.
