When I saw an ecoprint, it was on fabric, but nonetheless I was mesmerized. I wanted to know how I could capture the essence of a plant on paper. That was in the Fall of 2021...and ever since then I have been combining my background in watercolor painting, collage, mixed media, quilting, and large scale acrylics with the art of ecoprinting.
During the spring and summer I use all the flowers that are blooming on my property at the moment. I find new plants and experiment to see what qualities they confer to the paper. I try new ways of wrapping and binding the papers to find new patterns and shapes. For me, ecoprinting is an unending adventure except for wintertime. Then the adventure ends briefly while the snow covers the ground and I find myself focusing on my mixed media landscapes.
I lived in the Southwest US for close to two decades and the mesas, spires, red rocks, and vast expanses of space live in my heart and come through on paper as horizontally oriented studies in atmospheric perspective. At the end of the day, all of my artwork seems to be a Rorschach test for everyone who sees it. The landscapes take people back in their memories to a time they were ensconced by the desert and the Ecoprints are so abstract that people's subconscious mind translates them into animals, fairies, crowds, etc. It never ceases to amaze me what people see in a random collection of plants.
