Artist Statement
My work is in fiber, hand-made paper, hand-dyed silk, surface design and fabric manipulation.
I began working with fabric as a child many (many) years ago, when I designed and made dolls’ clothes! I went on to design debutante, bridal, and designer clothing for "real people", and in 1959, my designs appeared in Vogue magazine. Later, I put my fibers on the wall instead of the body, making intricately embroidered wall hangings and sculptures.
In 2000 one of my beading designs was accepted in CowParadeNY2000. It was a completely beaded life-size fiberglass cow! Five hundred of these cows were shown on the streets of New York City and were later auctioned off for children's charities.
Through the years, I have received many grants, among them, Endowment for the Arts and Pollock-Krasner Foundation. My pieces are part of the permanent collection of the National Association of Women Artists at the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University, which includes other luminaries such as Mary Cassatt, Judy Chicago and Louise Nevelson. Enjoy taking in my work, which appears around the world including in my birthplace of San Juan, Puerto Rico, at La Concha Hotel, and has been featured in Architectural Digest and Fiber Arts Now.
