Artist Statement
I taught myself portraiture after a failed attempt to create a custom calendar with illustrations of my children. Over the past two years, I have been practicing portraits in watercolors.
I love to paint people of all ages. From smooth baby skin to wrinkled golden agers, chiseled models or very emotional street portraits; the human face in any form is fantastic as art.
Highlights on skin has no color, while adding the deepest tone add a lot of contrast and enhances a portrait. In addition, some irrelevant colors can add so much to a skin tone. This is what attracts me to paint portraits. Watercolor is my preferred medium as it is easy to cover large areas and add on layers, it is odorless and dries fast, yet the dried layer can be manipulative.
Being able to do portraits is a blessing; I especially enjoy creating family portraits with members who no longer live with them. On looking at my portraits, my hope is that others get the feeling they are looking into the face of the person they know so well. That is my reward as a portrait artist.
