The Friends of the Nashua Public Library will hold their annual meeting on Sunday, November 20, at 2 pm in the NPL Theater. This meeting is open to the public. During a short business discussion, the Friends will review their activities of the past year, as well as take nominations for three Board positions. After the business portion, there will be a special program presented by Ann McClellan on British Servants: Your Life Downstairs: British Servant Culture in Fact, Fiction, and Film. Light refreshments will be served.

About the program: Servant narratives have been popular for centuries, but there is a resurging interest in these stories in recent decades. Many contemporary British and North American writers, filmmakers, and television executives have turned to master/servant relationships as their subject matter. For example, The Remains of the Day; Gosford Park; Upstairs, Downstairs; Manor House; and Downton Abbey. Ann McClellan explores the history behind the rise and fall of British servants and why Americans are so fascinated by their stories on page and screen.
