Mayor's virtual program honors women's suffrage

The 100th anniversary of passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, falls on August 18, 2020. Mayor Jim Donchess is marking this historic occasion by presenting Voting Victory: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment on Sunday, August 16, at 2 pm.Voting Victory: Celebrating the 199th anniversary of the 19th amendment, August 16, 2020, 2 pm. The virtual event will be broadcast on Mayor Donchess’ Facebook page and on Nashua CTV’s Channel 16.

The event has a local focus, featuring U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen, State Senators Cindy Rosenwald and Melanie Levesque, Congresswoman Annie Kuster, Dr. Sindiso Mnisi Weeks, freelance writer and Telegraph columnist June Lemen, community activist Sandy Belknap, and journalist and author Quincy Whitney.

Also on the bill are readings and re-enactments by actors from the Nashua Theatre Guild and Actorsingers. Nashua Community Music School students will perform music of the suffrage movement.

Between featured speakers and performers, the program will offer voter-registration information as well as news clippings and photographs from the era, courtesy of the Nashua Historical Society.
